Fiorella Giovannetti: Empowerment Through Dance
Just because you know a lot about a subject does not guarantee that you know how to teach others about it. It isn’t a condemnation by any means, teaching is just its own distinct area of expertise.
Some come into it naturally; Fiorella Giovannetti is a University of Calgary alumna with a Bachelor of Education and is fully qualified to teach the many styles of dance that she has practiced thus far in her life. In her own words, “I have always done some sort of dance throughout my life. . . It started when I was younger in Argentina at my Aunt’s ballet studio.” From there she moved forward through a variety of different types of dance and movement arts including figure skating and gymnastics.
Teaching has always been one of her passions. She is one of Unleashed Dance Company’s resident teachers of Salsa, Bachata, Wedding Dance Choreography, and Kids’ Classes.
Empowerment Through Dance
Her experience in Education has had a huge impact in the way that she approaches teaching. Fiorella has tools to reach a more diverse audience and to lead larger classes (in a pre-COVID world at least). “I have students who learn at a slower pace than others… What the majority of your class might understand in a certain time frame does not necessarily apply to all your students.” Giovannetti works to explain the subject matter in as many different ways as she can.
“Our goal is not only to educate the curriculum, but also to empower that person to feel confident with whatever they want to do.”
Speaking Their Language
An important tool for Giovannetti as a teacher are her linguistic skills. She is fluent in English and Spanish, and proficient in Italian. “I come from an Italian family but . . . was born in Argentina. Talking with my grandparents, (is how I learned) Italian.” Being able to offer classes in different languages is essential to connecting with more people. She wants people to feel comfortable and confident when learning to dance.
